Asian Film Academy (AFA) is an educational program hosted by Busan International Film Festival, Dongseo University and Busan Film Commission to foster young Asian talents and establish the network for Asian filmmakers. 24 young filmmakers from all over Asia are selected each year for 18-day filmmaking workshop, which takes place during the film festival season in Busan, Korea. Over the past 10 years, 241 alumni from 29 countries have shown outstanding work in prestigious film festivals throughout the world.
World-renowned directors of our contemporaries, such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien (AFA 2005, AFA 2008), Abbas Kiarostami (AFA 2010), Jia Zhangke (AFA 2012), Lee Chang-dong (AFA 2013) and Béla Tarr (AFA 2014), have taken on the role of dean and shared their great film experiences with the fellows. Krzysztof Zanussi served as the AFA Dean in 2011 and was the very first dean of AFA from a non-Asian country.
The promising fellows from all over Asia participate in the various AFA programs, including short film production. Masters and industry experts work with the fellows to produce two short films, which are officially presented at the annual Busan International Film Festival. While working on the films, the fellows rediscover themselves and share their passion towards films that go far beyond the differences in their experiences and cultural backgrounds.
The presentation is given by Seok-geun Oh, the Deputy Dean of Asian Film Academy, President of Asian Film Commissions Network (AFCNet) and Director of Busan Film Commission, Secretary-General of Busan International Film Festival from 1996 to 2000.
