Writer, director. Debuted as a director in 1969. Winner of numerous national and international awards, including Silver Berlin Bear from Berlin IFF for ONE HUNDRED DAYS AFTER CHILDHOOD (1975), Grand Special Jury Prize from Venice Film Festival (SOMEONE ELSE’S WHITE AND THE SPECKLED) and Silver Sea-Gull from Sofia IFF (ANNA KARENINA (2009)). From 1995 to 1997 he was President of the Moscow International Film Festival.
